Pattaya has a louder reputation than its reality. The truth, from people who live here: it's a generally safe city where serious crime against visitors is rare — and the real risks aren't what the headlines suggest. Here's what actually to watch for.
The short version
Generally safe. Violent crime against tourists is rare.
Biggest real risk: road safety — rented scooters. Wear a helmet or don't ride.
Watch for: rental & jet-ski scams, inflated bar bills, petty theft.
Road safety — the real danger
This is the one to take seriously. Thailand has one of the world's higher road-accident rates, and rented scooters in the hands of inexperienced tourists are the main cause of injuries here — far more than crime. Always wear a helmet, don't drink and ride, and if you're not a confident rider, don't rent a scooter at all — use baht-buses, Grab or a car. If you do rent, use a trustworthy shop.

The most common way visitors lose money. Watch for rental scams (fake damage claims, big deposits paid by chat), jet-ski scams (damage demands), inflated bar bills, and the classic gem/tailor "deals." None are dangerous — just keep your wits, agree prices up front, photograph rentals before you take them, and never hand over your passport as a deposit.

Opportunistic theft — bag-snatching from scooters, phones left on bar tables — is the main street crime; keep valuables secure and bags on the inside of the pavement. In nightlife areas, use normal caution: watch your drink and your bill, use Grab late at night, and don't flash cash. The busy areas have a visible police presence.
Solo travellers, women & families
Plenty of solo travellers, women and families visit and live here happily. Apply the same common sense you would in any unfamiliar city. Families are well catered for — beaches, islands and attractions away from the nightlife strips. If something does go wrong, Pattaya's private hospitals are excellent.
