Day trips from Pattaya

By Tim Paemi · Updated 27 June 2026 · No sponsors, no paid placements

Pattaya's best feature might be how easy it is to leave for the day. An island with clear water sits 40 minutes offshore, Bangkok is a two-hour hop, and a cluster of gardens, temples and a quieter island lie just down the coast. Here are the trips worth making.

Koh Larn — the obvious one

A 40-minute ferry from Bali Hai pier drops you on Koh Larn (Coral Island) and its turquoise bays — the clearest water near Pattaya. It's the single best day escape, and easy to do solo without a tour.

Bangkok — the city fix

About two hours by car, bus or minivan. Doable in a day for the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, markets and malls, though an overnight is calmer. Buses run all day from Pattaya, including to both Bangkok airports. See the route guide →

Koh Samet — the quieter island

Off the coast near Rayong, Koh Samet is a ~1.5–2 hour drive plus a short ferry, rewarding you with more pristine, postcard beaches than Pattaya's. Best as a long day or an easy overnight.

South of the city — gardens, zoo & temples

A short drive south packs in the family favourites: the world-class Nong Nooch Tropical Garden (botanical gardens, cultural shows, dinosaur valley), the open-enclosure Khao Kheow Open Zoo, and the striking Khao Chi Chan (Buddha Mountain) beside Silverlake Vineyard. Closer in, the all-teak Sanctuary of Truth in Naklua is a must-see in its own right.
