Money, ATMs & exchange in Pattaya

By Tim Paemi · Updated 27 June 2026 · No sponsors, no paid placements

Thailand runs largely on cash, and a couple of simple habits will save you real money over a trip. Here's how ATMs, exchange and cards actually work in Pattaya — and how to avoid the bad rates that catch most visitors.

The short version

ATMs & fees

ATMs are everywhere — every 7-Eleven, mall and bank branch. The catch: a fixed ~฿220 fee per withdrawal for foreign cards, on top of your home bank's charges. Since it's a flat fee, withdraw the maximum (often ฿20,000–30,000) rather than small amounts to cut the cost per baht. Some travellers use fee-reimbursing travel cards to dodge it entirely.

Currency exchange — the real saving

This is where most people lose money without realising. Dedicated exchange booths like SuperRich and Value Plus give noticeably better rates than ATMs, banks, hotels and — worst of all — the airport. Bring clean, undamaged notes, check the board rate, and you'll get materially more baht for your money.

Cards & going cashless

Cards (Visa/Mastercard) work in malls, larger hotels, supermarkets and bigger restaurants, and many places now take QR payments. But markets, baht-buses, street food and small bars are cash-only, so never rely on plastic alone. The Thai PromptPay QR system is everywhere but needs a Thai bank account.

Smart habits

Bring some baht or fresh home-currency notes; exchange the bulk at a booth, not the airport; withdraw large amounts when you do use an ATM; and always keep some cash on you. Simple, and it adds up.
