Songkran in Pattaya

By Tim Paemi · Updated 27 June 2026 · No sponsors, no paid placements

Songkran is Thailand's new-year water festival — and Pattaya throws the longest, wettest version in the country. Thanks to the local Wan Lai festival, the water fights run for days past the national holiday. Here's when it happens, where, and how to come out the other side smiling (and soaked).

The short version

Why Pattaya's is the wildest

Most of Thailand celebrates Songkran 13–15 April. Pattaya keeps going. The Wan Lai festival — Pattaya and Naklua's own tradition — extends the water fights for several more days, usually peaking around 18–19 April. So while the rest of the country dries off, Pattaya's Beach Road turns into a days-long water battle with foam parties, music and crowds.

Two sides: party and tradition

It's not only a giant water fight. Wan Lai keeps the cultural roots — sand-pagoda building on the beach, parades, and merit-making at temples — alongside the soak. Mornings and temples lean traditional and family-friendly; central Beach Road after dark is where it gets rowdy.

How to survive (and enjoy) it

Assume you'll be wet all day if you step outside — there's no neutral ground. Waterproof your phone (a sealed pouch), leave the good camera home, wear quick-dry clothes and grippy sandals, and keep cash in a zip bag. Getting around, every baht-bus and walker is a target; agree taxi prices first. And remember it's hot, dry season — the water is genuinely welcome.
