Renting a scooter or car in Pattaya

By Tim Paemi · Updated 27 June 2026 · No sponsors, no paid placements

A scooter is the cheap, easy way to get around Pattaya — but the licence and safety side matters more here than almost anywhere. Here's what it costs, the rules, and how to rent without getting caught out.

The short version

What it costs

VehiclePer day
Scooter (110–125cc, auto)฿200–300
Bigger motorbike฿400–1,000+
Economy car฿800–1,200
Larger / SUV฿1,200–1,500+

Weekly and monthly rates are cheaper per day. Fuel is extra but inexpensive.

Licence & the rules

Legally you need a motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) (or a Thai licence). Plenty of shops rent without one — but then you're uninsured, exposed to fines at police checkpoints, and a travel-insurance claim could be refused after an accident. Sort the IDP before you travel. A helmet is legally required.

Renting safely

Prefer a shop that lets you leave a cash deposit rather than your passport. Photograph the bike all over before you ride to avoid bogus damage charges, check brakes, tyres and lights, and keep the rental agreement. And be honest about your skill — Thailand's roads are unforgiving, so if you're not a confident rider, baht-buses, Grab or a car are the smarter call.
