Pattaya is one of the easiest cities in Asia to land in cold — but a handful of local basics will save you money, hassle and the odd cultural misstep. Here's what I'd tell a first-timer before they fly in.
The short version
- Carry cash — much of Pattaya is cash-only.
- Get around by baht-bus or Grab; agree prices first.
- Respect the monarchy and dress modestly at temples.
- Don't drink the tap water; grab a SIM on arrival.
- Watch the classic jet-ski and rental scams.
1. It's a cash society
Carry baht. ATMs charge a ~฿220 foreign-card fee, and exchange booths beat the airport. Money & ATMs →
2. Getting around is cheap & easy
Shared baht-buses loop the main roads for ~10–20 baht; Grab and Bolt cover the rest with no haggling. Getting around →
3. Respect the culture — especially the monarchy
Thailand takes deep pride in its King and royal family; insulting the monarchy is a serious criminal offence (lèse-majesté). Dress modestly at temples, remove shoes where asked, and a smile goes a long way.
4. Don't drink the tap water
Stick to bottled water — it's cheap and everywhere. Ice in established venues is fine.
5. Sort a SIM on arrival
Grab a cheap tourist SIM at the airport or any shop for instant data and Grab/maps. SIM & internet →
6. Agree prices first & know the scams
Settle taxi/rental prices before you commit. Photograph any rented scooter or jet-ski thoroughly to avoid fake "damage" claims — the classic Pattaya scam. Is Pattaya safe? →
7. Mind the seasons
It's hot year-round; Nov–Feb is the dry, cooler sweet spot. Best time to visit →
8. Small everyday things
Tipping is modest and optional; 7-Elevens are everywhere (snacks, SIM top-ups, bill payments); and English is widely understood in tourist areas.
